KEEPING OUR YMCA HEALTHY: CORONAVIRUS

At the Beaufort-Jasper YMCA of the Lowcountry, we take your health and safety very seriously. The respiratory illness Coronavirus has spread across the world, and now officials in the U.S. have warned that we might see an outbreak across the United States. When a serious health issue arises, our staff team comes together to reassess our strategies to keep our members and staff healthy.

We understand people may worry about the new Coronavirus. In today’s connected world, an outbreak anywhere can be a risk everywhere. Risk is dependent on exposure.

While CDC considers the Coronavirus a serious situation and is taking preparedness measures, the immediate risk in the U.S. is considered low. Basic hygiene is the best thing you can do. Everyone should always take simple daily precautions to help prevent the spread of all respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap or use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol.
  • Sneeze and cough into tissues.
  • If you get mucus or spit on your skin, clean it off right away.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially people exhibiting respiratory symptoms and fever.
  • Stay home when you’re sick.
  • Regularly and thoroughly clean surfaces, such as counter tops and doorknobs, with a disinfectant.

The coronavirus is spread through respiratory vapor, such as when someone sneezes or coughs into the air around you. Influenza viruses and common cold viruses are also spread this way.

At the Wardle Family YMCA, these are some precautions and actions that we are initiating:

YMCA staff that are ill will be sent home and asked to stay out of work until they are symptom free.

  • We are asking members who may be ill with a contagious condition to stay home and return to the Y when they are feeling better.
  • YMCA staff that are ill will be sent home and asked to stay out of work until they are symptom free.
  • We are asking that any members or staff the contract the Coronavirus contact us to let us know so we can follow protocol.
  • Additional hand-sanitizer is available to all. We’re have added a hospital-grade sanitizer to all our spray bottles in fitness centers.
  • We are asking all members to clean equipment BEFORE and AFTER workouts, with the antibacterial spray that we provide.
  • Our staff will be cleaning doorknobs, light switches, counter tops, equipment, handles, weights, etc.
  • We will communicate via social media, email blast, and our website of any closing or cancellation of programs.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

WARDLE FAMILY YMCA OF BEAUFORT’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS

Port Royal, S.C (Sept. 24, 2014) – The Wardle Family YMCA of Beaufort  announced today that its Boots & Bling Fundraiser & Silent Auction held on Sept. 20 raised more than $25,000 for its capital campaign.  The fifth annual fundraiser was held in a new location at The Shed in Port Royal, keeping it close to home with almost 200 party-goers attending.

“Sponsors, Y members and friends and even visitors to the area generated an incredible amount of enthusiasm, while raising money to help resurface our indoor pool,” said Mike Bostwick, YMCA CEO. “It would not have been a success without the tremendous support of all our sponsors and the volunteers – from our hard-working Boots & Bling committee to Y members who purchased tickets and all those who donated their time, money and energy.”

Boots & Bling committee member Lori Elliott with husband Roger and her mother Gloria Owens, plus several  volunteers, transformed the Shed into a casually elegant space replete with cozy lounge area including straw bale ‘sofa’, photo booth niche and shabby chic décor –  illuminated under several hundred twinkling lights. Appetites were satisfied with tasty offering from Beaufort Bread Company, Cookies by Charlotte, Dockside, Emily’s Restaurant, Fat Patties, Groucho’s Deli, Q on Bay, Piggly Wiggly, Sea Eagle, The Kitchen and Brenna Chiavello who prepared a scrumptious cake artfully decorated with the Boots & Bling logo.  Bill’s Liquor Store generously donated beer, wine and ingredients for the famous cactus juice while Palmetto Vending supplied water and sodas.

The event raised money through ticket sales, sponsorships and the popular silent auction, that offered a wide variety of items generously donated from local businesses.  New to the event this year was the addition of a raffle for an EZ-GO golf cart, won by Donald Meyer. The winning ticket was drawn by Ms. South Carolina, Deborah Flynn, who graciously volunteered her time to welcome guests to the event.

All proceeds from the Boots & Bling event benefit capital improvements to the YMCA.  Please see below for pictures from the event as well as a comprehensive list of event sponsors.

Hot Dogs Become Cool Canines at the Y’s First Puppy Plunge of the Season!

Port Royal, SC (September 16, 2014) – This year’s first PUPPY PLUNGE event, all canines are invited to take a dip in the YMCA outdoor pool.

Puppy Plunge is scheduled for Saturday, October 4th from 10AM-12PM at the Wardle Family YMCA of Beaufort County (1801 Richmond Ave., Port Royal, SC 29935) and will continue on the first Saturday of each consecutive month.

The cost is only $5 per canine and all proceeds benefit the “Learn to Swim” program at the Y. “We want dogs to bring their parents for a splashing good time,” said Mike Bostwick, CEO of Wardle Family YMCA. Proceeds from all our Puppy Plunge events benefit our ‘Learn to Swim’ program and with water literally everywhere here in the Beaufort area, it’s vital that our kids learn to swim. Plus, during Puppy Plunge our furry friends have a safe place to play – it’s a fun time for everyone.”

Well behaved and friendly canines of all breeds and sizes are welcome to attend the Puppy Plunge on the first Saturday of each month.  As long as the weather cooperates, this event will continue until the outdoor pool opens again for humans use in the spring.

Dogs must be well behaved, current on all required vaccines and leashed until inside the pool area. Owners must be present at all times and humans are not permitted to swim in the Puppy Plunge.

For more information, call 843-522-9622.
